Work hard and you will succeed on merit, Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, told the audience at the Global Women\u2019s Forum 2020 in Dubai on February 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I started to work, I started at the very lowest level of the government scale and I don\u2019t think anybody knows this about my journey,\u201d said the daughter of\u00a0\u00a0Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of Dubai.\u00a0At the time, the\u00a0Dubai Culture & Arts Authority\u00a0was\u00a0at\u00a0\u201cits initial stage\u00a0..\u00a0basically, a start-\u00a0up,\u201d she said, stressing\u00a0the importance of getting your “hands dirty\u201d and\u00a0enjoying\u00a0the\u00a0challenge of working your way up. \u201cYou can\u2019t start at a managerial role,\u201d she said, adding that \u201cthe process can be beautiful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the forum, other successful women leaders also shared their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mimoza Kusari-Lila, chairwoman of the Liberal Democratic Political Party in\u00a0Kosovo \u2013 Alternativa,\u00a0said that she\u00a0started\u00a0her real journey in politics\u00a0in 2009 as a candidate for \u201ca position that was never held by a woman before.\u201d She was running in the election for a mayor position at the local level. She lost her first election but won the second one. One thing she kept in mind, was that if she lost the second election she would be \u201cdefined by that loss.\u201d And if she made it, it was\u00a0thanks to her strong determination, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some noted how one’s environment can\u00a0contribute\u00a0to\u00a0shaping\u00a0a\u00a0woman\u2019s\u00a0path in life.\u00a0Sheikha\u00a0Latifa said\u00a0she was influenced by \u201cbe[ing]\u00a0surrounded\u00a0by very\u00a0powerful women.\u201d\u00a0She grew up watching\u00a0her mother and aunts \u201cinfluenc[ing] society\u201d and having their \u201cmajlises open\u201d\u00a0to everyone. All this created a \u201cnatural transition\u201d for her to \u201cwant to do something and work in the public sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\u00a0Rania Al\u00a0Mashat, Egypt\u2019s current Minister of International Cooperation, said she was\u00a0\u201craised to be gender-blind.\u201d\u00a0Consequently, her ambition\u00a0was not\u00a0to be\u00a0labeled\u00a0as\u00a0\u201cthe only woman in the room, but the best person in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Shaikha\u00a0Latifa\u00a0said opportunities for women are promising, from her experience with the culture industry in Dubai which “has been growing organically for the past 30-40 years.” And Dubai wants to \u201ccontinue this organic growth,\u201d she said. Conferences such as the women’s forum in Dubai\u00a0help \u201ctell the girls that there\u2019s nothing they cannot do\u201d and that it\u2019s not about one success story in one country or one continent, but about \u201cpromot[ing]\u201d these success stories to the globe, said\u00a0Kusari-Lila.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
