Rami Malek, a first-generation American with Egyptian roots, won the best actor award for his performance in \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d at the 91st Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re longing for stories like this. I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, I\u2019m a first-generation American…my story is being written right now,\u201d the 37-year-old actor said during his acceptance speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Egyptian Embassy in Washington congratulated Malek after his win. \u201cRami Malek has made Egyptians happy and proud tonight as the first American-Egyptian to win an Academy Award. Congrats Rami…Egyptians are proud of you,\u201d the Embassy said in a twitter post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am not surprised that an Egyptian succeeded and achieved an Oscar awards. This becomes attainable since he was provided with a healthy environment that supports creativity and innovative performance,\u201d Ahmed Alim, a film director and critic, told Arab News. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCongratulations to Rami Malek…It\u2019s such a great start for a young and talented actor. His origin is Egypt and that\u2019s enough to make us happy, but growing up in the U.S gave him a chance to win,\u201d Sherif Amer, a talk show presenter, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before Playing Freddie Mercury in \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d Rami Malek was known for his role in Mr. Robot, though he began his career playing \u201ctypical\u201d Middle-Eastern roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malek\u2019s roles in his early career were mainly pharaohs, and terrorists. He began refusing any roles \u201cwith any negative portrayal of Arabs\u201d after playing a terrorist in \u201c24.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the past it was like, \u2018Oh well, he\u2019s an acceptable terrorist! He\u2019s an accessible terrorist! \u2026 But after I did [24] I said to myself, \u2018You know what? Bullshit. No more. This is not how I want it.\u2019 \u2026. Any calls that come about playing Arabs or Middle Easterners in a negative light? I don\u2019t need to respond to any of them any more.
