In collaboration with the Dubai Press Club, the Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Communication (the MBRSC) launches a nationwide High School Competition for the second year awarding two grade 12 students a full paid scholarship at American University in Dubai.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The competition is divided into two categories, Investigative Journalism and Short Films, which accepts both English and Arabic submissions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Last year, the MBRSC initiated this competition with only one category, which was Investigative Journalism. However, this year AUD welcomes future filmmakers with their second category, Short Films.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cOur primary goal is to spark a conversation between students and parents to discuss a career in Journalism or Storytelling,\u201d said Dr.Carol Moufarrej, Associate Dean at Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication. \u201cWe aim to create more appreciation for this field as it\u2019s overlooked in this community,\u201d she added.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Journalism enthusiasts should manage to write about local, social, cultural, economic, or national issues under a thousand words. Moreover, the submission should include a folder with images to support their investigative piece.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Storytellers are required to create a one to three-minute short film featuring one of the three themes, \u201cHappiness,\u201d \u201cBrotherhood and Sisterhood,\u201d or \u201cA Day in your Life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Students are encouraged to explore their creative abilities and produce a short film that could be fiction or non-fiction, a documentary, narrative, music video, or a public service announcement. If you\u2019re a fan of animation, live actions, and comedy, you shouldn\u2019t be afraid to choose amongst these options.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0A student at Cambridge International School, Pari Gupta said, \u201cI believe that this initiative is innovative and encourages millennials to think with a broader contextual perspective by engaging with different aspects of everyday life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt also allows students to showcase their creativity and strives to move past just academic excellence by giving importance to those with artistic abilities to feel as though they are a vital part of the community,\u201d added Gupta.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The prize includes a full scholarship for two students, one from each category, and three winners will be presented with gifts from sponsors, including Paris Gallery and Emirates NBD.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Students to be evaluated by professionals in journalism and production fields.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll be reading the articles objectively,\u201d said Yasmine Bahrani, Assistant Professor of Communication and Information Studies, \u201cI\u2019m looking for students with unique and good ideas. It\u2019s important for me to see if they\u2019ve made an effort and if they\u2019ve got good sources. Even if the article is flawed, I need to see the seeds or roots of a journalist.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0She then added, \u201cSheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid has been generous with his scholarships at AUD to encourage more journalists for the Arabic media. That is why AUD has a rich Arabic track.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the official AUD website, \u201cHis Highness funds 75% of the undergraduate students who meet admission requirements.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Established in 2008, the MBRSC aims to provide young minds with distinct education and transform them into media professionals that produce high-quality media content of local, regional, or global significance as they graduate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Interested students are required to send their submissions by 15 March 2018. Investigative Journalism participants will be awarded at the Arab Media Forum in April 2018. And the Short Film competitors will be showcased at the Original Narrative Student Short Film Festival 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n
